New York Living Rooms is the first installment of Dominique Nabokov's holy trinity of interior photography, reissued by Apartamento Publishing more than two decades after its initial publication in 1998. Originally commissioned as a photo essay for the New Yorker in 1995, it offers a candid and intimate study of the interiors of some of the city's most famous cultural figures, including Susan Sontag, Norman Mailer, Louise Bourgeois, Francesco Clemente, Allen Ginsberg and Joan Didion. Without adding or changing anything, Nabokov calls these pictures her "interior portraits." Some rooms are lavish and ostentatious, others house the essentials, but Nabokov simply captures them for her fellow voyeurs and leaves us to decipher the rest.
