Pyracantha ‘Red Column’, commonly known as Firethorn, is a well-known and reliable hardy shrub which will thrive in just about any location. Forming dense, prickly branches, it’s ideal for use as hedging as well as for training against a wall where the evergreen foliage will provide year-round interest. This versatile, upright shrub can grow to a height of around 3m when left unpruned, but it’s also incredibly easy to keep it small as it responds very well to a hard prune. Its natural habit is tall and columnar, which is what makes this variety so well suited to growing against the house or as a free-standing shrub. But you can also use it to create an impenetrable and secure hedge. During spring, Pyracantha produces dense clusters of white flowers which are a magnet for bees.
