Hamamelis intermedia 'Jelena' is an eye-catching, well branched Witch Hazel. The spreading stems are cloaked in green foliage in summer, blending gently into the background while other plants take centre stage. With the onset of autumn, this hardy shrub steps into the spotlight, its leaves turning to bright red and yellow. By January it is at its best, with fragrant, spidery blooms, in a rich shade of copper-orange, that adorn the naked branches. An excellent winter-flowering shrub for woodland gardens and winter borders that will be sure to catch the eye and make a difference during those colder winter months. Grow Witch Hazel in borders in non-alkaline, rich fertile, well-drained soil. Choose a position in full sun or semi shade. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve its structure and fertility.
