The large trumpet shaped flowers are up to 8cm (3in) across and are a deep pink colour, with red centres appearing in late summer through until Autumn. Flowering later than other varieties when other varieties are looking tired. Upright branches bear handsome, three lobed, dark green leaves, but will look fantastic planted in a herbaceous border as much as a tropical style garden. Grow Hibiscus on rich fertile, reliably moist, well drained soil, in full sun. When growing hibiscus plants in patio containers use a soil based compost, such as John Innes No. 3. Feed and water hibiscus regularly until fully established. Apply a dry mulch such as bark chips to the base if the plant in autumn to protect from winter cold. Prune hibiscus in late spring, removing any stems that have died back or been damaged over winter. Hibiscus are often one of the last shrubs in the garden to break bud, so be patient with plants that are slow to start into growth in spring - they may remain dormant until May!
