169 pages, 85 black and white illustrations of clocks, watches and portraits, plus illustration of a document to supply and install a new clock for the old "Barr-Gate" Ipswich in 1684 and a folded map of Suffolk. Very detailed list of some 600 persons engaged in the craft or trade from the sixteenth century until about 1870. The book is in good overall condition, with blue cloth boards in very good condition and bright gold lettering to the spine. The unclipped dust jacket is ripped at the top edge and has been covered in a clear plastic sleeve. The cover illustration is of the painted dial of a longcase clock by Richard Cole of Ipswich. The scene in the arch shows the Cornhill, Ipswich, with (on the extreme left) Cole's shop which he occupied from 1799 until he died in 1833. This is a very rare, if not unique example of a clockmaker incorporating a view of his business premises in the decoration of a clock dial.
