Fortunately for the Allies, the "Jugs" were no milksops. Their eight .50 calibre machine guns were adept at taking down the Luftwaffe's juggernauts and their heavy armour protection let them shatter ground targets with relative impunity. All 130 P-47M fighters were deployed with the 56th Fighter Group which had the second highest air-to-air kills of the war.
