If white Burgundy and Viognier are the first bottles in your basket, this Lirac Blanc will make an excellent alternative choice. Lirac sits opposite Châteauneuf-du-Pape along the west bank of the Rhône River. BIg and bold red wines may be the norm in this area of France but its also a prime spot for richly textured rounded whites. Léon Perdigal has long been a Majestic favourite. Their wines are consistently great value and because this bottling comes from a lesser known appellation, the barometer for quality stretches even further. Made from traditional Rhône grape varieties, Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Viognier, its aromatic, oily and powerful. Expect lively notes of exotic fruits, white peach and hints of vanilla, with a balancing, refreshing acidity. Just like fine Chardonnay and Viognier, this will age for 68 years but if you choose to drink it now, enjoy it with everything from vegetarian dishes to creamy white-meat dishes.
