Quilts were made in Australia in Colonial times by convicts, on board ships, by the wives of Governors, by genteel ladies of the Colonies, by wives and daughters of the men who came to the Gold Rush, by Victorian ladies , by children and by men. They reflect the history of Australia from Colonial times to the Depression and World War II. Before the Colonial period, there were indigenous Australian quilts made from patches of skins of kangaroo or possum which were highly sought after by the first white settlers.
