Easy to read and enlivened by the back-stage gossip of the day, this biography is, nevertheless, fully documented, and from first to last contains no fiction. Garrick is shown as a boy in Lichfield, sharing many experiences with the youthful Samuel Johnson, and as a struggling wine merchant in London, stage struck yet convinced of the decadence of the prevailing style of acting. Then comes that red-letter day in stage-history when, as Richard III, the twenty-four-year-old Garrick revolutionises the art of acting overnight. His Long Career as a manager and star actor at Drury Lane forms an amazing record of success, interrupted only by quarrels with actors and dramatists, the rights and wrongs of which are here considered. Good condition: Used but well maintained. All pages are present but suffering from marks, foxing and other signs of wear. The dust jacket has a few tears, but protected by plastic.
