Easy to read and enlivened by the back-stage gossip of the day, this biography is, nevertheless, fully documented, and from first to last contains no fiction. Garrick is shown as a boy in Lichfield, sharing many experiences with the youthful Samuel Johnson, and as a struggling wine merchant in London, stage struck yet convinced of the decadence of the prevailing style of acting. Then comes that red-letter day in stage-history when, as Richard III, the twenty-four-year-old Garrick revolutionises the art of acting overnight. His Long Career as a manager and star actor at Drury Lane forms an amazing record of success, interrupted only by quarrels with actors and dramatists, the rights and wrongs of which are here considered.
