On 24 January 1905, electrical operation was started on the 23.7 km long railway line to the Ammertal valley. It was the first ride of an electric train under a simple AC overhead line. This made it the first line to be equipped with a new system, the "railway current" used to date in central and northern Europe.The route was initially driven by electric railcars, and later with small, up to 50 kilometers per hour, electric locomotives. The energy in the form of single-phase alternating current came from the water power plant Kammerl at the Ammer. From 1930, the bullish LAY in 5later 169 005reinforced the electric locomotive fleet on the Oberammergau train. Despite their length of only 8.7 m, the small power pack proved to be excellent.For decades the railway, with its coziness and idylic surroundings of a Bavarian local railway, has exercised a special charm for all railway enthusiasts.
