William Plomer's Collected Poems was first published in 1960. This enlarged edition includes all the poems from 'Taste and Remember' (1966) and 'Celebrations' (1972). Its appearance coincides with the author's seventieth birthday, and in the preface he looks back at the development of his beliefs and aims as a poet. Almost coeval with the century, he shows how his temperament and destiny obliged him to struggle to free himself from accepted ideas and to aim at a new directness and clarity. He outlines his preoccupations with place, period and character, and warns of the present dangers to the poet of courting publicity and instant applause. Some damage to the dust jacket but book in good condition.
