Born on 25 November 1844 in Karlsruhe, Carl Benz was able to become independant in Mannheim with a small mechanical workshop from 1872, thanks to his father-in-law. In this "Tueftlerwerkstatt" a combustion engine was first developed, which could be operated with petroleum (gas mixture) instead of gas. With the help of interested donors, production of the two-stroke engine "System Benz" began in 1881. As early as 1885, the first three-wheel motor car was developed, which was operated with a four-stroke combustion engine. On January 29, 1886, the vehicle with gas engine operation was patented by the Imperial Patent Office with number 37435. Carl Benz in Mannheim, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in Cannstatt, implemented their ideas on the drawing board.
