Paul Nash was one of the outstanding British artists of the twentieth-century. An official war artist in both World Wars, he created some of the iconic images of the century. His awareness of Continental avant-garde movements, and his links with fellow artists and writers, placed him in the forefront of the Modern Movement in England. Yet, at the same time, his mystical love of the English landscape cast him as a direct heir to Palmer and the Pre-Raphaelites.
