Dieter Roth in America : 9780500976425 : 29 Nov 2004 : Dieter Roth was one of the most innovative and challenging artists of the 20th century. A Swiss, born in Hanover who also lived in Iceland, he is generally considered to be a European artist. However, during the preparations for the retrospective at MoMA in New York it became clear that America played a crucial role in Roth's artistic development. In Philadelphia he and his students experimented with new graphic and photographic techniques, installing an amazing exhibition at the Museum School of Art as well as creating Snow, a major work now owned by MoMA. In Providence he continued his experiments with different food stuffs, creating paintings or prints incorporating these perishable materials in the processes. Here he had his first large studio and the work made there is pivotal in the development of his oeuvre. In Los Angeles he made his famous 'Staple Cheese (A Race)' exhibition using suitcases filled with different cheeses. I
