The printed board game reached heights of beauty and ingenuity during the nineteenth century. There was a golden period for up-market hand coloured games at the start of that period but by the end of the century the advances in lithography meant that the cost of making these games had come down massively. Games were made on almost every conceivable theme, whether academic subjects such as geography and history or on the brief crazes of the moment. This book presents examples of all of these genres and allows the reader to trace how the games progressed, or in some cases became infantilised as the intended user became a child rather than an adult.
