Lovely mahogany travelling chess set that unfolds to show ebony and box wood inlaid board with holes for pegs , together with complete set of bone pieces, white and stained red. The fitment (hinges and hook fastenings) are brass. There is no maker's mark. It's after the style of Jacques of London but there is no signature. Stylistically it seems to be early 20th century (c 1900-15?) Clever design that ensures that when closed the game remains intact. When fully folded, the set measures 10cm x 20cm x 6cm deep. Opened out the square is15cm x 15cm, with an additional border c 15mm surrounding it for "taken" pieces. The overall dimensions when opened are c 40cm x 20cm The set has clearly been treasured and played with. There is a crack on one side of the interior lid. There are some small signs of wear and a lovely patina. We have made no attempt to polish this.
