The first edition of this book was published in 1821, and this 'new' edition proudly tells the reader that 'it has never been in the hands of Hawkers or London Booksellers' - it appears to have been privately published by the artist himself, and bound by a local Isle of Wight bookbinder. Containing 36 beautiful engravings of scenes on the Isle of Wight, it is a treasure trove of detail and information about the Isle in the early part of the 19th century. The artist was entirely self-taught, and his engravings still command good prices today. George Brannon (1784-1860) was born in Ireland, and moved to the Isle of Wight in 1809, where he established an engraving business. Though almost entirely self-educated he became one of the most prominent engravers of his time, displaying great awareness and skill with both watercolour and oil, as well as a keen eye for architecture.
