Vanity Fair, A Novel Without a Hero London: Bradbury & Evans, 1848. First Edition, later issue. The book has these features of a true 1st Edition: - The street address is on the title page, the verso is blank. - "Mr Pitt" on p. 453, line 31, not "Sir Pitt". - There is an illustrated frontispiece. These features are not present: Page 336 does not have a woodcut. Page 1 is not "rustic type". The Title page is not engraved. There is no duplicate of the frontispiece facing page 619. The book is beautifully bound in aubergine, full crushed morocco by Riviere & Son. Spine with raised bands, gilt lettered label to one panel and richly tooled to the others. Marbled endpapers, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt. There is a pen inscription on the third inside page and very small pencil markings to the last 2 endpapers. Frontispiece, title vignette and 38 plates. Joints expertly repaired. This is a very rare, extremely attractive book.
