As a comparatively green young army officer Captain Petersen was immediately drawn to this elegant city and the South Vietnamese people. He was there as a member of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam working under the control of the CIA. Captain Petersen was sent to Darlac province in the central highlands of South Vietnam to recruit and train a special force of Montagnard tribesmen - a vigorous, attractive people whose loyalties lie with their land and their clans. Together they fought a guerilla operation to contain Communist infiltration from the Naris This highly successful force became known as the Truong Son Force or "TIGER MEN" and at its height comprised of more than 1700 men before Captain Petersen was prematurely withdrawn by the CIA.
