In the introduction to the book Glover gives a history of the codpiece, origoinally intended o simply provide covering material between two separate gentlemen's stockings "little by little, the codpiece expanded in size, snarl, and just-look-at-me ambition." Glover considers the codpiece in suits of armour and in various depictions in paintings by Giorgione, Signorelli, Titian and Holbein among others. Towards the end of the book he considers the decline fo the codpiece, in as portrait of Robert Dudley from c. 1575 "the codpiece registers barely a squeak of a peek."
