Thrust: A Spasmodic Pictorial History of the Codpiece in Art - Michael Glover Never let it be said that our book selection is pedestrian and filled with titles that might make Richard & Judy's Book Club list! In the introduction to the book Glover gives a history of the codpiece, origoinally intended o simply provide covering material between two separate gentlemen's stockings "little by little, the codpiece expanded in size, snarl, and just-look-at-me ambition." Glover considers the codpiece in suits of armour and in various depictions in paintings by Giorgione, Signorelli, Titian and Holbein among others. Towards the end of the book he considers the decline fo the codpiece, in as portrait of Robert Dudley from c. 1575 "the codpiece registers barely a squeak of a peek." Dare we suggest that this might be the stocking filler to end all stocking fillers. Paperback. 92 pages. Measurements 10.8cm x 17.7cm x 1cm
