Thoreau: His Life and Aims, A Study by H. A. Page, published by Chatto and Windus, 1878. The book is 271 pages with an extra 36 pages of the publisher's list of books. Brown cloth covered boards with elaborate gilt decoration and lettering on front board and spine, and a matching blind embossed pattern on the back board. The volume has been neatly rebacked, retaining original spine material. Decorative blue floral paste down and free endpapers. Hinges, joints and binding remain relatively tight. The frontispece is a black and white portrait of Thoreau, separated from the title page by a tissue guard. There is no foxing in the print block and a little foxing on the tissue guard. The front free endpaper has a small tear and the front paste down bears a purple library sticker which has been partially removed.
