Grow your own intriguing, carnivorous plants from seed! The leaves of the pitcher plant have evolved into water-filled funnels that hide a sinister purpose. Lured by sweet, nectar-like secretions on the lip of each pitcher, insects are met by a slippery footing and tumble into the water within each fabulous funnel. Your plants will be mature enough to catch insects after 2-3 years. Pitcher plants require an acidic compost with virtually no nutrients. Sow seeds from December to March on the surface of pots filled with moist sphagnum moss peat compost or salt free coir. Add some perlite or grit into the compost mix to ensure good aeration for the plants to grow in Do not cover the seeds or exclude light as this helps germination. Stand the pots in a tray of distilled water or rainwater. Avoid using tap water as this contains chlorine and other minerals which may damage the sensitive roots of Sarracenia plants.
