Introduce a tropical feel to your garden design with this striking and contemporary Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra). Green canes eventually age to a glossy black colour, usually by their third year for a really unusual effect. Unlike most other bamboos, this RHS AGM variety is not invasive, forming a neat clump of stems instead of spreading underground. Fast growing, upright and tall, this striking plant makes an attractive and effective screen, perfect for around the boundaries of your garden or towards the back of a border. It’s not fussy about conditions either, growing well in both sun or partial shade, you can incorporate it into a dense shrubbery for contrast and movement. When growing Phyllostachys nigra in large patio containers, choose a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant, firming well into the new container, then water well and position in full sun or semi shade. Alternatively plant Black Bamboos directly into borders in any moist, free drain
