An unusual sight in the garden, Miscanthus Zebrinus is a grass that is sure to attract attention. Certainly living up to its common name of Zebra Grass, the distinctive green leaves are blade like and feature horizontal cream stripes at random intervals. It makes an ideal specimen plant or alternatively can be planted in groups in an herbaceous border. In the autumn months, impressive flower plumes are produced high above the foliage, lasting well into winter, adding interest at a time when colour is scarce. This variety is easy to grow and has been awarded an RHS Award of Garden Merit for its all-round performance. Miscanthus Zebrinus should be positioned in full sun and grown in fertile soil that is moist yet well-drained. It may not do well in soils that sit wet in winter, so improve drainage on especially heavy soils prior to planting by adding plenty of well-rotted compost and grit.
