Luffa cylindrica is a great option for growing something unusual, but is practical too! As the fruits mature, they will dry out and leave a fibrous core, which can be used as a loofah sponge or a scouring tool to use in the kitchen. The fruits are also edible if they are harvested young and eaten like courgettes. These will require a greenhouse to grow, as they are grown in the same way as cucumbers, but they are certainly worth the time and resource!Best grown in a warm, humid greenhouse with a minimum temperature of 15C (60F). Plant at a spacing of 45cm (18"). Water well after planting until fully established.
