While commonly seen as a large tree, Hornbeam is also perfect for native hedging and will form an impressive part of any hedgerow if kept to the required size. The leaves will turn a lovely golden yellow in the autumn, and will fall to reveal fluted, grey branches for winter, putting on a show all year round. Prior to planting Hornbeam, incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant at the same soil level as they were growing at the nursery, and water well to settle the soil. Water young plants during particularly dry periods until fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the hedge. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer.
