This UK native fern, Polypodium vulgare, is often seen growing on stone walls, showcasing its remarkable resilience and adaptability. This hardy, evergreen fern thrives with or without soil, making it ideal for tucking into rock crevices, attaching to tree trunks with moss, or growing in deep, moist soils in borders. It tolerates both full sun and partial shade, and while it needs good moisture to establish, it becomes drought-tolerant once its spreading rhizomes are established. Polypodium vulgare forms a mat-like growth, with leathery, ladder-like foliage that spreads beautifully over rockeries, troughs, and border edges.
