A stalwart of cottage gardens! Delphiniums are outstanding architectural perennials for the back of summer borders. This showy mix of Delphinium plants sends spires of blooms upwards, in a gentle range of cool blues and creamy white. These majestic perennials bring height and structure to borders and make impressive cut flowers for summer bouquets. When growing delphiniums, choose a sunny position that is sheltered from strong winds, on moist, well-drained soil. Protect young delphinium plants from slugs and snails. Feed and water delphinium plants until they are fully established. The tall stems of delphinium flowers will require staking with stout canes. Canes should be put in place by mid spring to ensure that the plants are adequately supported throughout the growing season. Cut spikes of faded delphinium flowers back to a flowering side-shoot to encourage a second flush of blooms to be produced. In autumn, cut the old foliage back to ground level.
