Low-maintenance, clump forming and non-invasive Bamboo 'Asian Wonder' will at first produce green stems, but decorative ruby-red stems and olive-green foliage at maturity (3-5 years). As the canes mature, strip some of the lower foliage away to show off the highly decorative stems - the contrasting colours give a tropical appearance. Height: 3m (10'). Spread: 1.2m (4'). When growing Umbrella Bamboo in pots, choose a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant, firming well into the new container, then water well and position in full sun or semi shade. Alternatively plant Umbrella Bamboos directly into borders in any moist, free draining soil. Bamboos dislike poor, dry soils. If your soil is particularly free draining, improve it by adding plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting. Choose a sheltered position that is protected from cold, drying winds. Fargesia murielae spreads via underground rhizomes so is best given space to grow. Alternatively
