In the 1890s in the English city of Salisbury, a young engraver named Theodore Brown became fascinated by optical toys, photography, stereoscopy, and moving images. Ingenious paper engineering also featured throughout Brown's inventive life, eventually leading to the design of numerous wonderful pop-up pictures for the Daily Express Annuals and Bookano books. These pop-ups frequently featured subjects that moved - including woodmen sawing a log, a startlingly effective opening and closing Tower Bridge (London), and a caveman clubbing a prehistoric beast! In subsequent years - and even today - these paper mechanisms have inspired many designers of children's books. Until recently, credit for Brown's pop-ups was given to Louis Geraud (his co-patentee and publisher), but it is now established that Theodore was responsible for all of the designs, many of which were re-cycled after his death.
