The author wrote this novella about upper class society in late 19th century England, when she was just nine years old, and part of its appeal lies in its juvenile innocence, and unconventional grammar and spelling. It was reprinted 18 times in its first year alone. Margaret Mary Julia Devlin (18811972), known as Daisy Ashford, was an English writer, most famous for writing "The Young Visiters", but also author of four books of short stories, some 50 years later. Our book is a 1955 copy, and its condition is consistent with age and frequent use. Bound in deep pink paper-covered boards with title etc in white on the front, it is scuffed and worn at edges and corners, and lacks a spine. Inside, however, the sewn binding is firm with no loose pages; pages are all clean and bright, and only minimally tanned, and on the front fep is an ink-written inscription signed 'Daisy Ashford' and dated July 1958.
