Charles Knight's Imperial Shakspere published by Virtue in two volumes, bound as three. Tight bound, unfaded, half maroon leather with gilt titles on spine, patterned boards, 'Morris' patterned end papers, linen reinforced hinges, edges of boards unworn, all edges of text block gilded, profusely illustrated. No inscriptions, prelims and tissue guards show some foxing, internals bright Vol 1 - edges and top/tail of spine show minor edge wear, top corners mild bruising, scores reveal 4cm of undersurface of board. Vol 2 - edges and top/tail of spine show minor wear, corners good, 1cm x 1cm damage on face of front board Vol 3 - edges and top/tail of spine show minor wear, mild bruising of corners, front board partially faded This the posthumous edition published circa 1873, with Knight's original preface and biography of the poet. A lovely set in remarkable condition for its age, price reflects relatively plain half leather binding and damage to boards.
