Intended to be a sort of textbook and introduction to pattern-making, recognising that 'almost every fresh pattern that is made requires some amount of independent thought from the artificer'. It embraces aspects from the right sort of wood - well-seasoned - to tools like bench vices and core box planes, to different sorts of joints. It's illustrated, and has a glossary and index, and is written in an accessible style. First edition? Brown, cloth-covered boards with black lettering, with some wear and bumped corners and spine, and a small number of stains. Binding is relaxed and holding, though front hinge is cracked as are e.g. pp 96-7. Page edges a little soiled; end papers have owner's plate on them; there are odd marks, from a small amount of foxing to tiny amounts of fluff; text is clean; it looks as though the book has been used. For its age in good condition.
