With this volume the series of Oxford Books of Verse from the sixteenth century to the present day is fittingly completed. No selection could be more difficult to make - it runs from 1892 to 1935 - and it is fortunate to that it should have been performed by one of the most eminent poets of our time. Most of the well-known and the great poems of these years will be found in this anthology, but the selection is marked with individuality. In an introductory essay Mr. W. B. Yeats discusses personally and directly the poets and poetry of his own time. The essay should remain as one of the more important literary pronouncements of recent years. Altogether there are in this anthology nearly four hundred poems, selected from the works of about a hundred British and Irish authors. The collection ranges from poems by Hopkins, Bridges, and Dowson down to the modernism of Day Lewis and MacNeice.
