Inscribed by the author in black ink on the half-title page: 'Presented to "the Abbey School" by the author'. The author's printed compliments slip is also loose inside. Original grey/brown cloth with blue titles to front and spine, and crest of the abbot to front. Printed on fine paper, with all edges untrimmed. Frontispiece and eight further plates, all present. Chapter head-pieces, and one further in-text illustration. The frontispiece is a fold-out bird's eye view of how a reconstructed abbey might look. It has a closed tear (approx. 9 cm) in the top edge. All illustrations in black & white. Very light marking/fading to boards, tear (approx. 6 cm) at top edge of spine, spine itself browned, browning to free endpapers, occasional foxing but contents generally clean and bright.
