A little while after the initial publication of Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll rewrote a new edition designed for much younger children, with simplified language, a puppy called Dash, and twenty of the classic illustrations by John Tenniel (although the board illustrations are by E. Gertrude Thomson) enlarged in colour- which caused some problems when the printer produced the first 10,000 sheets, Carroll immediately declared themfar too bright and gaudy, and then demanded they be reprinted. There are a few differences between early editions as a result. This particular volume of the Nursery Alice is therefore an interesting one, as it is dated 1889 (the date of the rejected first run); not an American edition (some of the rejected sheets were sent to be sold in the USA) or a People's Edition; has a price of three shillings decoratively blocked out and one shilling printed above (I have seen volumes being sold that have a price of *four* shillings blocked out, but not three); the
