From 1947 to 1951 several Abstract Expressionists achieved 'breakthroughs' to independent styles and went on, as the first generation of the New York School, to receive growing recognition globally. Some - Pollock, de Kooning, and Rothko - were elevated to art history's pantheon. Younger artists who subsequently entered their circle - the second generation - such as Larry Rivers, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, and Rauschenberg, were also acclaimed but would be eclipsed by the end of the fifties by the innovators of Pop, Op, Minimal, and Conceptual Art. Here, the author Irving Sandler contests that this second generation has been overlooked, dismissed as derivative, as the 'school' of de Kooning, and as the insignificant tail end of Abstract Expressionism. Sandler's critical and comprehensive exploration of the work of this 'group' includes 225 black and white illustrations, and eight pages in full colour. Soft cover is badly worn on edges and corners and has some scoring and marks. Pa
