The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables" is a collection of six short stories written between 1878-1885. In the title piece, the narrator, Charles Darnaway, is paying a visit to his uncle and cousin living on the island of Aros and hears an old wivesstory about a Spanish ship laden with treasure that went aground there years before, a victim of the treacherous reefs surrounding the island that are pounded by fearsome waves known as the Merry Men. When he learns there is an ongoing search for the treasure, he vows to uncover it first, and then he begins to notice his uncle is acting very strangely. Other stories included in the compilation are "Will o' the Mill", "Markheim", "Thrawn Janet", "Olalla", and "The Treasure of Franchard". Hardback book with black cloth boards. Top page edges are gilded in gold foil. Other two page edges are deckled. Pen inscription on first page inside front cover. Pages have yellowed with age.
