The Light Ages - Seb Falk Seb Falk's book is an exploration of medieval scientific thinking. Instead of those times being the dark ages, the author presents them as a time when thought was complex, inter-connected and far ranging. He structures the book through the footsteps of the monk John of Westwyk, who as well as being a man of the cloth was also a pathbreaking astronomer. There is of course much in the book that reads as bizarre to the modern reader - the treatment of a patient with an enema of goat kidney fat - but there is also much that is familiar. Falk doesn't just paint the picture of these times being one of intellectual sophistication (certainly more than they are popularly given credit for) but also examines some of its more outlandish ideas as well.
