Rare children's book from circa 1920 . First Folkard trade edition. Thin large 4to half brown cloth and oatmeal textured cloth-covered boards with a colour pictorial cover inlay. Lettered in black with red capitals. Illustrated with 12 fine full-page color plates by Folkard, mounted on heavy blue stock as well as numerous full-page and vignette b/w drawings. Pictorial endpapers. Charles James Folkard (1878-1963) was a prolific and imaginative illustrator of attractive childrens books, while also creating the influential strip cartoon,Teddy Tail. Initially contributing humorous drawings to such periodicals as Little Folks and The Tatler, he made his name, in 1910, with illustrations to an edition of Johann Wysss The Swiss Family Robinson. A year later, he illustrated The Childrens Shakespeare and Grimms Fairy Tales, so initiating a relationship with the publisher, A & C Black, which would last for twenty-seven years.
