This First edition, The House of the Nightmare and Other Eerie Tales, is an anthology edited by Kathleen Lines, published in 1967 by The Bodley Head. "The Macabre, the sinister and the unaccountable seldom fail to attract and entertain. In The House of the Nightmare Kathleen Lines has compiled an eerie anthology which includes traditional tales, from Iceland and from England as well as stories, some famous and some not so well known, by such writers as Walter de la Mare, Elizabeth Bowen, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, M. R. James, W. W. Jacobs, William Croft Dickenson, A. J. Alan, and Ambrose Bierce. Two of the stories in the collection appear in print for the first time. The final section of the book is devoted to a number of true first-hand accounts of inexplicable happenings by contemporary writers, Sir Arthur Grimble and Rosemary Sutcliff among them.
