The mysterious world of Gustave Moreau was described by Marcel Proust in the following words: " His house had already taken on the appearance of a museum, whilst Moreau himself had become merely the focus for the fashioning of works of art. In 1895, Moreau decided to extend his house in the rue de la Rochefoucauld and to create studios of sufficient dimensions to house his works. This was to be Moreau's ultimate creation. The layout of the museum faithfully reproduces the spirit of the original design, and a little over the century later, we can thus still 'enjoy the sum of the artist's lifetime of work and effort. The scrupulous restoration of the appartment rooms on the first floor to their original state, enables the visitor to have a closer and more intimate appreaction of this artist of Symbolism, who remains one of the essential links between traditions in art and the innovations of the last century.
