The beautiful hand-coloured plates [engraved by Thomas Dick and by J. W. Lowry] are by Augusta Innes Baker Withers 1792 - 1869, one of the outstanding illustrators of the day. She contributed to many famous works including Bateman's Orchidaceae of Mexico, and Maund's The Botanist. Augusta Withers was appointed Flower Painter in Ordinary to Queen Adelaide and later to Queen Victoria, and for many years exhibited at the Royal Academy.
