The summary on the dust jacket of this volume describes it as "both a survey of nineteenth century art and a study in depth of the culture of nineteenth-century Europe". Illustrated with over 200 B&W images, and 16 full colour tipped-in plates, it offers the reader a wonderful insight into the 100 years between 1800 and 1900, in Europe. Werner Hofmann (19282013) was an Austrian art historian, cultural journalist, writer, curator and museum director, "considered by his colleagues as one of the most distinguished European scholars of modern art and its ideology". Our book is in very nice condition, having benefited not only from a dust jacket, but also a stout card slipcase. The case is a little worn, but still intact, and includes the original pasted label from the publisher. The jacket has suffered rather more, with tears and chips to the top edges and bottom front corner; the main tear, down the front spine angle, has been mended with tape (see photo).
