The golden island of Tahiti seemed a paradise to the sea-weary crew of HMS Dolphin when, in 1767, they first set foot on its shores. This account of their experiences was written by the Master, to whose vivid and outspoken narrative have been added some piquant details from the Journals of other members of his ship's company. It paints an extremely entertaining picture of what happened when a party of English sailors stumbled into a Garden of Eden. Robert Gibbings, the illustrator, knew Tahiti well, and loved it: his engravings, exquisite in detail, convey all the timeless fascination of the island better than any camera. Book in almost perfect condition, with very good glassine and paper jacket and no signs of usage. Slight yellowing of the edges due to shelf wear.
