The Cloud of Unknowing was written originally in middle English in the last quarter of the fourteenth century by an anonymous mystic, probably a hermit. It is revealed for us at the end of the twentieth century as it has been for readers over so many generations. Together with The Letter of Private Direction, which forms the second part of this edition, the whole work presents contemporary readers with a precise and practical guide along the path of true contemplation. The author shows his readers a clear way and a greater understanding of the meaning of the love of God and does so with authority born of experience, and also with great joy and good humour.
