The title is followed by 'Being an account of their suffering', and the Author's Note claims 'This is a true story', narrated to the author by 'Mr Charles Eyre of Dulwich, one of the survivors'. It is located on the 'Auckland Isles', a little below New Zealand, and opposite the title page there is a colour plate of sailors on a boat grappling with a large sea creature - dolphin? It's an accessible first person narration, an adventure story. The book is undated, though the inscription is 1925. Blue cloth covers with impressed ships on the front, and gilt lettering on the spine. There is some discoloration on the front, and some fading on the back; a little shelf wear along the edges; binding appears firm although there is incipient cracking pp 224-5; end papers have an ink inscription (a prize); there is browning and foxing on end papers and page edges, and while these have crept onto the pages the text is largely clear of it and easily readable.
