John Martin (17891854) was an English Romanticist painter, engraver, and illustrator. He was celebrated for his typically vast and dramatic paintings of religious subjects and fantastic compositions, populated with minute figures placed in imposing landscapes. Martin's paintings, and the prints made from them, enjoyed great success with the general public, with Thomas Lawrence referring to him as "the most popular painter of his day". However, he was also lambasted by John Ruskin and other critics. In this text William Feaver assesses Martin's achievements as an artist of rare quality and imagination. Hardcover in dust jacket, not price clipped. Eight colour plates and numerous black and white illustrations. A very good clean copy. The jacket is now in a removable protective cover. xv, 256 pages. Size 25.3 x 19.5 x 2.6 cm. If you would like to browse the other books our shop has available online, please click on our shop's name.
