Taoism, the way of man's cooperation with the course of the natural world, was first conceived and explained by Chinese mystical philosophers in the fourth and fifth centuries B.C. Alan Watts illustrates this cooperation and shows what is meant by 'Tao' (the flow of nature), 'wu-wie' (not forcing things), and 'te' (the power which comes from this). He felt that Taosim is of immense importance to twentieth-century man, whose efforts to rule nature by technical force often have disastrous consequences. Drawing upon the ancient resources of Lao-Tzu, Chuang-Tzu, the Kuan-Tzu book and the 'I Ching', as well as the modern studies of Needham, Waley, and Lin Yutang, Alan Watts has been able to communicate the significance, and the enjoyment, of Taoism.
