This tokkuri sake decanter was made by Nihonmatsu-gama, a kiln working in the Suzu-ware tradition. A subject of mystery and fascination in Japanese ceramics, Suzu-ware was originally made in northern Ishikawa in the 12th to 15th centuries. Archaeological discoveries brought visitors to the region, and from the late 1970s a revival movement began to once again fire ceramics in Suzu. Still rare, modern Suzu-ware, such as this, presents once again the moody ash glazed forms of the local clay fired in traditional style kilns. The tokkuri is 15cm high.
