This tokkuri sake decanter was made by Nihonmatsu-gama, a kiln working in the Suzu-ware tradition. A subject of mystery and fascination in Japanese ceramics, Suzu-ware was originally made in northern Ishikawa in the 12th to 15th centuries. Archaeological discoveries brought visitors to the region, and from the late 1970s a revival movement began to once again fire ceramics in Suzu. Still rare, modern Suzu-ware, such as this, presents once again the moody ash glazed forms of the local clay fired in traditional style kilns. The tokkuri is 15cm high. (Please note that the cups are not included).
